Hurricane season 101: what every homeowner should expect

If you’re a homeowner in Texas or a hurricane-prone area, hurricane season isn’t just another time of year, it’s something to be ready for. Whether you’ve just moved into a brand new Homes by Faircroft home or lived in Texas for years, it’s always a good idea to refresh your knowledge and prepare your home before storms strike.

In this guide, we’ll cover the basics of hurricane season, what to expect, and how to prepare your home and family.

First, when is hurricane season?

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with peak activity from mid-August through October. This is the time when warm ocean waters and shifting winds create ideal conditions for tropical storms and hurricanes.

How to know what type of storm is coming your way.

•  Tropical Storm – Winds between 39–73 mph; heavy rain and some damage possible.

•  Hurricane – Winds of 74+ mph; severe damage and flooding are likely.

•  Storm Surge – A rise in sea level caused by the storm’s winds, often leading to coastal flooding.

•  Hurricane Watch – Conditions are possible within 48 hours.

•  Hurricane Warning – Conditions are expected within 36 hours; take immediate action.

What can you expect during these storms?

You can always expect heavy rain, flooding, strong winds, power outages, and limited access to important goods. It’s important to stock up on necessities to ensure you can stay sheltered in place if need be. Have extra flashlights, candles, and maybe even some board games to stay safe but also make the time go by.

How do I prepare my home?

At Homes by Faircroft, we know that proper preparation is just as important as good construction.  Here's what you can do to protect your home:

1. Inspect and Repair Your Roof

Loose shingles or tiles are especially vulnerable. Have your roof checked and repaired before storms arrive.

2. Clear Gutters and Drains

Make sure water can flow away from your home. Clogged gutters can cause roof leaks and water damage.

3. Trim Trees and Remove Debris

Falling limbs are a major cause of storm damage. Remove anything that could become a flying object in high winds.

4. Secure Windows and Doors

Install or check your storm shutters or consider upgrading to impact-resistant windows. Reinforce doors, especially your garage door.

5. Check Your Generator

If you have a backup generator, test it now. Make sure you have extra fuel stored safely.

Stay Safe, Stay Ready

Hurricane season doesn’t have to catch you off guard. By understanding what to expect and taking proactive steps to prepare your home, you can protect your property and your loved ones. Whether it’s securing windows, trimming trees, or simply having flashlights ready, every bit of preparation helps.

At Homes by Faircroft, we believe peace of mind starts with a well-built home and a well-informed homeowner. Stay alert, stay prepared, and don’t hesitate to reach out to your local emergency services or community resources if a storm is approaching. Your safety is what matters most.
